Southern Current will sell electricity to a utility provider after generating electricity from solar panels. (Photo/Provided)Charleston-based Southern Current LLC plans to invest $10 million into a new solar facility in Orangeburg County, according to a news release from the S.C. Department of Commerce.

The company owns and develops long-term solar energy projects — including solar farms and solar installations — for residential and commercial customers, utilities and business development groups.

The planned 8-megawatt, direct current facility, located between Springfield Road and Burgdorf Lane in Orangeburg, will be open by the end of 2017.

Southern Current deploys solar panels on homes and offices, and builds solar farms. (Photo/Provided)A series of solar panels on the facility will generate electricity from the sun; the electricity is then sold to the utility provider, said Bret Sowers, Southern Current’s vice president of development and strategy.

Around 40 people will build the Orangeburg facility, but no one will work there once it is operational, Sowers said.

“It’s very exciting to be part of projects like these that are helping to reshape South Carolina’s energy future,” Southern Current Founder and Chief Development Officer Paul Fleury said in the release.

Southern Current was formed when Sustainable Energy Solutions and Solbridge Energy merged in late 2015. The company has 35 people employees with a headquarters location at 1634 Ashley River Road in Charleston.

The company said it has hundreds of residential and commercial solar projects across seven states and more than 500-megawatts of utility-scale solar projects in different stages.

“Southern Current is working with regulators, landowners, utilities and business development groups throughout the United States to build more than 1-gigawatt of new solar projects by the end of 2017,” the release said.
