Trane, a provider of indoor comfort systems, announced today plans to invest $96 million and expand its Northeast Columbia manufacturing location by 680,000 square feet. The project is expected to create 700 jobs over the next three years, more than doubling the plant’s current Midlands workforce of 600 people, according to a press release.
Located at 400 Killian Road, Trane’s existing Richland County facility makes components and units for heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. Hiring for the new positions should begin in 2018 as construction nears completion, the company said.
“We are pleased to extend our commitment to Columbia, S.C., with a sizeable expansion of our HVAC plant,” said Dave Regnery, president of commercial HVAC North America, Europe, Middle East and Africa. “We thank the state of South Carolina, as well as Richland County, for their partnerships and will provide more details as we progress with the expansion.”
Hiring for the new positions should begin in 2018 as construction nears completion, the release added.
Trane HVAC systems serve commercial, residential and industrial markets. The company also provides advanced building controls and parts support.

Gov. Henry McMaster said Trane’s announcement reflected the quality of South Carolina’s workforce the state’s efforts to recruit new business and help existing firms expand.

Trane is a brand of Dublin, Ireland-based Ingersoll Rand, which reported $13.5 billion in sales in 2016.
