The Palmetto Trust for Historic Preservation and BF Spartanburg LLC are partnering on renovations to the Montgomery Building in downtown Spartanburg.

(Rendering provided)According to a news release, the partnership is focusing on the renovations to The Montgomery Building Theatre, including using “a specialized team of historians, researchers and builders to retain the architectural integrity of an iconic landmark like The Montgomery Building Theatre.”

"With a track record of achieving results, it was clear that The Palmetto Trust was the right partner for this project,” said James Bakker of BF Spartanburg, LLC, lead developer on the project, in the release.

The restoration will begin with an open house and fundraiser. After that, crews will restore plasterwork, decorative elements and the historic fabric in the theatre.

Michael Bedenbaugh, executive director of the Palmetto Trust, said a big challenge in the restoration project “is making sure that the space is rehabilitated with the future in mind. We aren’t renovating for tomorrow, we are renovating for two and three generations from now.”

BF Spartanburg LLC closed the building to begin renovations on Feb. 28. The company said it expects to reopen the mixed-use development sometime on 2018. The new development will include approximately 72 apartments with over 8,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space and 10,000 square feet of office space available, according to the Montgomery Building website.
