Updated:

AT&T restored service for customers in the Lowcountry and Midlands around 6 p.m. today.

A cut fiber, caused by a road construction crew, caused an outage for most of the day.

"Our crews responded and worked quickly this afternoon to repair the damage and restore service. ... We apologize for the inconvenience,"  company spokeswoman Ann Elsas said in an email.

Original story:

Many AT&T customers in South Carolina are without service today.

A map shows AT&T's outage areas, as of about 3 p.m. today.

The cutting of a fiber cable caused service to go down earlier today in much of the state.

AT&T did not say when service would be restored.

“Technicians are engaged and working quickly as possible to resolve the issue. We apologize for the inconvenience,” company spokeswoman Ann Elsas said.
