Furman will host two guest artists, pianist Sandra Rivers and cellist Wendy Warner in a recital Wednesday, March 20, at 8 p.m. in Daniel Recital Hall.

Presented by the Furman Department of Music, the concert is free and open to the public.

The two celebrated musicians will present works for cello and piano by Robert Schumann and Johannes Brahms.

The Julliard School-trained pianist Sandra Rivers enjoys a reputation as one of the foremost performing artists of her generation. She has concertized throughout the world and has appeared at the Mostly Mozart Festival at Lincoln Center, Tanglewood, Aspen, the Schleswig-Holstein Festival, the Kennedy Center and on the Great Performers Series at Lincoln Center.

In addition to her solo career, Rivers has become widely known for her concert partnerships with many of the world’s leading soloists including Itzhak Perlman, Kathleen Battle, Gil Shaham, Joshua Bell and Anne Akiko Meyers, among others.

Rivers was the featured pianist for the launch of Steinway Spirio, the high-resolution player piano, in Cincinnati, Ohio, and in Florence, Kentucky.

She has led a piano master class and adjudicated three competitions at the University of Alaska in Fairbanks. She appeared as guest artist with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra Chamber Players and performed three concerts at the Phoenix Chamber Music Society Winter Festival. This summer she will serve as part of the faculty at the Cincinnati Young Artists Chamber Music Festival.

Her recordings can be heard on labels including Teldec, RCA Victor Red Seal, EMI/Angel, Pony Canyon, CBS Masterworks, Musical Heritage and Zafiro (Spain).

A Steinway Artist, Rivers is on the keyboard faculty of the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. She is the artistic coordinator for the CCM/Steinway Recital Series which takes place at Steinway Hall in New York City.

Cellist Wendy Warner garnered international attention in 1990, winning top prize at the International Rostropovich Cello Competition at age 18. Her career took off with concerts conducted by Mstislav Rostropovich and debuts in Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Köln, Düsseldorf, Berlin and New York at Carnegie Hall.

A Chicagoan from a musical family, Warner studied with Rostropovich at the Curtis Institute of Music from which she graduated. She has collaborated with prominent conductors Vladimir Spivakov, Christoph Eschenbach, Andre Previn, Jesús López Cobos and Michael Tilson Thomas, among others, and has appeared with leading U.S. orchestras and internationally—from Paris and London to Serbia and Russia.

Highlights of Warner’s 2016-17 season include appearances with the Wichita and Columbus (Georgia) Symphonies and return engagements with the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional (Peru), and the Xiamen Philharmonic (China).

Hailed by Strings magazine for her “youthful, surging playing, natural stage presence and almost frightening technique,” Warner can be heard on recordings for Cedille, including Haydn & Myslivecek; Russian Music for Cello & Piano; Popper & Piatigorsky; Double Play; and Eclipse. She has recorded Hindemith’s chamber works on Bridge Records; Barber’s Cello Concerto for Naxos; and compositions by Dalit Warshaw on Albany Records.

An Avery Fisher Career Grant recipient, Warner holds the Leah D. Hamer Distinguished Faculty Chair at the Schwob School of Music, Columbus State University. She plays a 1772 Joseph Gagliano cello.
