Walt’s Waltz Kicks Off Their Launch Party:
More Chances to Dance – Sounds of Hope Concert

Greenville, SC – Walt’s Waltz has officially launched ticket sales for its inaugural event: More Chances to Dance – Sounds of Hope Concert. The goal of the event is to increase the understanding of anxiety and depression so we as a society can stop dancing around mental health conditions. The concert will be held on April 25, 2020 from 6:00 PM – 11:00 PM at The Spinning Jenny, 107 Cannon Street in Greer, SC.

What is Walt’s Waltz?
Walt’s Waltz is an upstate South Carolina-based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that strives to end the negative stigma that comes with mental illness. We advocate for the establishment of safe spaces for open communication in all settings, and seek to bring clarity to the severity of a person’s depression and/or anxiety. A primary goal of our program is helping people comprehend the seriousness of these mental health conditions.

How did Walt’s Waltz begin?
Walt Crooks was a gentle, loving soul who died from anxiety and depression on Thursday, August 22, 2019, after 20 years of struggle. The loss of Walt led his mother, Susan, and brother, Will, to establish Walt’s Waltz in an effort to open conversations and change perspectives on mental health.
“Walt’s life is a lesson of love,” explained Susan Crooks. “One of his greatest passions was to help understand and relieve the suffering of others experiencing mental health challenges. Walt lit the path to help us create a more compassionate and kind world through his loving examples of how to treat others with understanding, empathy, and kindness,” continued Susan. “Walt lives on in the mission and people of Walt’s Waltz, and our determination to stop dancing around mental health conversations.”

Walt’s Waltz Mission
The mission of Walt’s Waltz is three-fold:

1. Safe Spaces – Establish safe spaces for open communication not only in small circles of safety, but everywhere – the workplace, schools, social settings. Walt’s Waltz will be a resource to help educational institutions, businesses, and communities have comfortable conversations about mental health conditions.
2. Stages of Severity – Numbers are assigned to clarify the severity of one’s anxiety and depression for consistency and understanding. Walt’s Waltz plans to make this possible through an assessment app for use on any smart device that will help assess the stage of anxiety and/or depression a user may be experiencing. It will also help users find treatment at a nearby location, offer online services and suggest suitable self-care.
3. Stigma Free Communities – We strive to end the negative stigma that comes with mental health conditions through education and understanding. We will collaborate with community members to make citizens with anxiety and depression feel valued, supported and safe. We will create a culture in which residents seek treatment without fear of stigma. Through our actions, we will help communities reduce suicide rates.
We will also establish events that bring our community together in a stigma-free environment. These events will help dispel myths, educate the public and show support for those affected by anxiety and depression. The More Chances to Dance – Sounds of Hope Concert in one such event.

More Chances to Dance – Sounds of Hope Concert
In 2016, according to the CDC, suicide became the second leading cause of death among those aged 10–34 and the fourth leading cause among those aged 35–54. We hear so much about homicide rates, but there are twice as many deaths from mental health conditions.
More Chances to Dance will help raise awareness and end the stigma of talking openly about these conditions that affect 1 out of 5 people in their lifetime. More Chances to Dance featured artists include: Jason White, Pat Travers, Sarah Siskind, Charlie Weiner, Eric Congdon, and Lindsay Keane.
All proceeds raised will be invested in the development of resources to help and educate those who struggle with mental health conditions and their support team.

Those unable to attend can keep Walt’s mission moving forward by making a donation at www.waltswaltz.com/donate. Funds raised from this event will help create a Comfortable Conversations Curriculum focused initially on local South Carolina colleges, develop an assessment app to help identify the current level of distress, and foster stigma-free communities.
