Congaree National Park sets visitor record

Congaree National Park saw a record number of visitors in 2017, welcoming close to 160,000 people.

The number surpassed last year’s high of almost 144,000. The park in Hopkins saw a significant increase despite the national average of park visitors falling by 90,000.

The National Park Service registered a record number in 2016 with 331 million visitors.

During August’s total solar eclipse, Congaree National Park offered ranger-led tours to optimal viewing areas that sold out well in advance of the event.

March drew the most visitors with close to 22,000. January and September were the least-visited months, averaging close to 7,500 visitors.

In total, 159,595 people visited Congaree National Park in 2017, up from 143,843 in 2016. In 2015, the year of devastating floods in the area, attendance dropped to 87,513 from 120,122 in 2014.
