The S.C. Department of Revenue and the IRS will begin accepting individual income tax returns beginning Jan. 27.

The department recommends taxpayers file their 2019 income tax returns electronically and select direct deposit to ensure faster and more accurate processing of their returns. According to a news release, 90% of individual income tax returns in South Carolina were filed electronically last year.

Some state residents are eligible to file their state income tax returns online for free.

To avoid errors, the Revenue Department recommends taxpayers use their W-2, 1099 and other forms instead of a year-end pay stub. Incorrect information could lead to a delay in processing, the department said.

The process for amending returns has changed. Taxpayers will have to file a new 2019 SC1040, check the amended return box, and include a completed amended return schedule. The previous SC1040X can be used to amend returns only for tax years 2018 and earlier.

In 2019, the S.C. Department of Revenue issued 1.6 million income tax refunds totaling $1.67 billion.

State and federal returns are due April 15.

The Revenue Department is also hosting industry-specific seminars to help business owners and tax professionals understand their sales and use tax obligations.

The seminars, which begin in March, will include exemption information and a chance to ask questions of department staff. The events will be held from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. and cost $50 to attend.

The seminar schedule is as follows:

  • Manufacturing: March 19, Hilton Garden Inn, Columbia
  • Educational institutions: June 18, Hilton Garden Inn, Columbia
  • Government and Municipalities: Aug. 6, Hilton Garden Inn, Columbia
  • Retail: Sept. 17, Hilton Garden Inn, Columbia
  • Restaurant and Bar: Oct. 6, Embassy Suites at Kingston Plantation, Myrtle Beach
