Coastal ProvisionsWild Dunes Resort eliminated plastic straws in August and used 15,000 fewer straws resortwide for the year.

In addition to installing signage about reducing plastic waste, the resort ordered paper Aardvark straws in a variety of sizes to accommodate the various types of beverages served at the resort’s seven restaurants.

Patrons at Coastal Provisions restaurant can also purchase stainless steel straws to use and take home.

The annual Charleston Leaders Leader Gala is scheduled for Jan. 18 at Merchants Hall on North Market Street in downtown Charleston. The event will include music, hors d’oeuvres and appetizers.

Tickets for the Charleston Leaders event are $75 for members and $100 for nonmembers.

The Coastal Community Foundation of South Carolina has awarded a $8,256 grant to the Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired – Charleston’s Focus on Children program.

Focus on Children clinics serve more than 1,500 students in 22 schools, 21 of which are Title I. The program provides a comprehensive eye exam for children not passing the initial screening on site, and the nonprofit provides free, prescription glasses and referrals to a doctor for follow-up care.

LimRic Plumbing, Heating & Air has chosen the Christmas Commandos and The Green Heart Project as recipients of the company’s November Give Back Grant. LimRic makes a financial contribution to two nonprofit organizations each month via the grant.

Christmas Commandos runs toy drives and fundraisers; then, with a police escort, participants visit the home where a child or children have lost a parent within the past year to hang presents from trees in front of their home.

The Green Heart Project builds garden-based projects and school gardens to educate students and create community connections.
