Two Bi-Lo grocery stores in the Charleston area will be converted to Lowes Foods next year, giving the company four locations in the region.

Hickory, N.C.-based Alex Lee Inc., which owns Lowes Foods, is purchasing the Bi-Lo stores located at 3125 Bees Ferry Road in West Ashley and at 1000 Tanner Ford Blvd. in Hanahan, the company said in a news release.

Lowes operates two stores in the Charleston area in Summerville and Mount Pleasant. The company has several stores in the Myrtle Beach area, Columbia and the Upstate, as well. Lowes, which has its home office in Winston-Salem, N.C., also plans to convert two Bi-Lo stores in Columbia and one in Greenville in the coming months.

Lowes said the stores in West Ashley and Hanahan will continue as Bi-Lo branded stores until the sale closes, which is expected to happen in the fall. Lowes will do a “complete conversion” to the Lowes brand by the summer of 2021, the company said.

“We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to accelerate our Carolinas expansion in the Charleston market with the addition of two new stores,” Lowes Foods President Tim Lowe said in a statement. “People from Summerville and Mount Pleasant have welcomed Lowes Foods with open arms since we opened our first store in 2017, and we look forward to serving even more Lowes Foods fans with the two new stores this fall.”

The Lowes Foods chain employs about 9,000 people at 74 grocery stores in North Carolina and South Carolina. Alex Lee owns several brands in North Carolina, Virginia and South Carolina, including W. Lee Flowers, a wholesale distributor based in Scranton, which owns the IGA and KJ’s Market grocery brands. Alex Lee acquired W. Lee Flowers in October.
