The National Medal of Honor Museum Foundation has named Joe Daniels, former CEO and president of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, the new CEO of the National Medal of Honor Museum.

DanielsDaniels will join the museum on Sunday, taking over for interim CEO Bill Phillips, who also serves as chairman of the foundation’s board. Phillips had been serving as interim CEO while the board searched for a replacement for former CEO Mark Updegrove, who resigned unexpectedly in December.

“The board is confident that Joe is the perfect person to bring the dream of this living museum to fruition,” Phillips said in a statement.

Daniels left the 9/11 Memorial & Museum last year and has since served as a senior adviser at the consulting firm McKinsey & Co. He said it is a “tremendous privilege” for him to help lead the National Medal of Honor Museum.

Architect's lecture

Israeli-born architect Moshe Safdie, who designed The National Medal of Honor Museum, will give a lecture at 6 p.m. Wednesday at The Charleston Museum. He will speak about his goal to create meaningful, vital, inclusive spaces that enrich their communities. Tickets are $15-$35.

“This museum, centered around our core values, will house uniquely American stories of bravery and sacrifice, serve as a place for all to gather and will be a place our entire country will cherish,” he said in a statement. “I am deeply thankful to the museum's board of directors for entrusting me with this great responsibility.”

The Medal of Honor Museum is planned to be near Patriots Point and the USS Yorktown, but the Mount Pleasant Planning Commission rejected the museum’s design in January, mainly because the proposed height of the museum is over the height limit for new buildings in Mount Pleasant. Phillips said last month that the foundation is currently working with the town to try to receive approval for the design.
