Midlands Gives raises record amount

Midlands Gives, the annual day of philanthropy hosted by the Central Carolina Community Foundation, raised $1,756,332 Tuesday.

The record-breaking amount surpassed last year’s total of $1,672,118. The event also saw an increase of more than 1,000 donors compared to last year.  

JoAnn Turnquist, president and CEO of Central Carolina Community Foundation, said she was focused more on the number of donations than the amount of dollars given. She said Midlands Gives has helped change public perception of a philanthropist from a billionaire to an everyday citizen.

"This year's event featured a higher energy, with nonprofits showing up at 4 a.m. Tuesday," Turnquist said. "Their excitement and stories shared helped keep momentum going all day. It demonstrated how much the community cares."

Donations started coming in early in the morning, and Turnquist said the event reached the $1 million mark four hours earlier than last year.

More than 14,600 donors contributed to 372 nonprofit organizations in 11 Midlands counties.

Since its inception in 2014, Midlands Gives has raised more than $5.5 million.
