Starting May 5, Avelo Airlines will be expanding its East Coast service with routes from New Haven, Conn., to four Southeast destinations. Flights will include nonstop service between Tweed-New Haven and Charleston, Myrtle Beach, Savannah and Nashville.

“Today’s announcement is yet another exciting milestone in our rapidly growing low cost, nonstop service for Lowcountry travelers,” Charleston Airport Director and CEO Elliott Summey said a statement. “It is exciting to have another new air carrier at Charleston International and our first nonstop service to New Haven, Connecticut. Avelo’s partnership with Charleston International solidifies our commitment to increasing flights to the Northeast.”

Flights from Avelo, the 12th airline to service CHS, will operate Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday during the first few weeks of operation. A Saturday flight will be added later on May 26.

CEO of Explore Charleston and Board Chair of the Aviation Authority Helen Hill said Avelo’s decision to expand into Charleston is a testament to the strength of Charleston’s economy and the region’s potential.

“Our region's travel industry enjoyed a robust recovery last year that consistently outpaced national averages,” Hill said. “The opportunity to develop this new partnership with Avelo and expand access to and from the Northeast is a significant step toward maintaining that momentum in 2022.”

The expansion brings Avelo Airline’s network to 10 nonstop destinations. The new routes will operate on Boeing’s 737-700 aircraft. One-way fares on all four routes will start at $49.

Avelo Airlines Chairman and CEO Andrew Levy is co-founder and previous president of Allegiant Air and chief financial officer at United Airlines. He founded Avelo in 2018 out of Houston and said the expansion was inspired by customer feedback.

"The significant service expansion we announced today builds on the excitement for Avelo we are seeing across Connecticut,” he said. “Our customers are telling us they would love for Avelo to fly to more places beyond Florida. These four new routes show we're listening.”

With the flights, Avelo will become the only airline offering nonstop flights between Connecticut and Savannah/Hilton Head, as well as between Southern Connecticut and Charleston, Myrtle Beach and Nashville.
