Newsweek has recognized Columbia-based Colonial Life as one of America’s best companies for customer service in its 2019 list.

The publication compiled the inaugural list to recognize personal service in a changing retail landscape, global editor in chief Nancy Cooper wrote on Newsweek’s website. Newsweek worked with research firm Statista to collect and analyze data in 141 retail categories.

Colonial Life was named the No. 1 customer service provider in disability insurance.

“We are proud that being one of Newsweek’s America’s best companies for customer service recognizes our commitment to our customers,” Tim Arnold, president and CEO of Colonial Life, said in a news release. “We are proud of the way our employees stand behind our promise to protect America’s workers during a difficult time. This award recognizes the great work by our 1,300 employees, each of whom is responsible for delivering customer service.”

The Newsweek survey included 132,954 customer evaluations of both brick-and-mortar and online companies that factored in the likelihood of customer recommendation. Other criteria included quality of communications, technical competence, range of services, customer focus and accessibility.

“Newsweek has always been committed to deep reporting about American workers, both the challenges they face and the transformations they achieve,” Cooper wrote. “This new story builds on our legacy of authoritative coverage. The automated future is already upon us, and the hope is that we — as a nation and as individuals — can shape it to our advantage.”

Other ranked categories, broken down into segments, included clothing, home goods, restaurants, sports and leisure, transportation, and food, health and beauty.
