People can learn to write proposals for grants through a free class offered by the South Carolina State Library Friday.

The Proposal Writing Basics class is from 10 a.m. until noon on Oct. 18 at the library on Senate Street in downtown Columbia. The class is free but registration is required.

“If you own a business and you’re interested in writing proposals, it never hurts to learn the process, because it’s one of those skills that you can transfer into what you do in the private sector,” said Ellen Dunn, public information coordinator for the library.

Dawn Mullin, information services librarian, will give advice on proposal writing and offer samples from which leaders of businesses and nonprofits can base proposals. Mullin also will give advice about what signatures proposals requires and how they should be packaged.

“She is very educated on things and she’s a great person to ask questions, so she is a good resource for small businesses,” Dunn said. “Although there’s not a lot of small business grant money out there, there is some, and she can point you in the right direction.”

Dunn said because of the program’s popularity, it is offered frequently throughout the year, including a Saturday session which combines proposal writing basics and grant writing on Nov. 16 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
