The South Carolina Small Business Development Centers has opened a satellite office in Chapin.

The organization provides consulting services to existing and prospective small business owners and entrepreneurs. The Chapin office, in partnership with the Chapin Chamber of Commerce, is being led by Beth Smith, senior business consultant.

Smith currently offers appointments every Tuesday with plans to increase availability as demand grows.

Nancy Williamson, chair of the Chapin chamber board, is a former manager of the Newberry Area SBDC, an experience which sparked the idea for a Chapin office, as well as a longtime colleague of Smith’s. Smith has been with the SC SBDC since August 2008, helping clients obtain nearly $30.5 million in funding.

“Beth helps many business owners chart a path to success, and she has been instrumental in making the SC SBDC a vital player in the state's economic landscape,” Michele Abraham, SC SBDC state director, said in the release.

Chapin chamber president and CEO Paul Salder said Smith’s leadership will boost the Chapin business community.

“Her wealth of knowledge in all types of business will be an asset to all those who have a business or those thinking of starting a business,” he said.

Smith managed the Spartanburg Area SBDC from 2011 to 2019. In a typical year, she conducted more than 1,290 counseling sessions, assisted 195 clients and hosted workshops attracting more than 200 attendees. She earned the SC SBDC’s South Carolina State Star award in 2016.

Smith is also the SC SBDC's representative to the South Carolina International Trade Coalition.
