Firm nabs $10M contract to repair Folly Beach erosion

The Army Corps of Engineers, Charleston District, awarded a $10 million contract to Marinex Construction Co. Inc. to fill in eroded areas on Folly Beach caused by Hurricanes Matthew and Irma.

The Charleston-based firm will place approximately 750,000 cubic yards of material on a portion of the east side of Folly Beach running from Eighth Street East to north of Summer Place Road, as well as areas around 1739 E. Ashley Ave. and the Bird Key wildlife habitat area.

Work will begin in March and end in September. Crews will work 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Most of the beach will remain open to the public during construction. Construction updates will be updated continuously online. 

“Both the corps and our non-federal sponsor for this project, city of Folly Beach, acknowledge that construction during the summer will cause temporary inconveniences to people using these stretches of beach for recreation,” project manager West Wilson said in a news release. “However, beginning the construction project now enables the major, long-term benefits of protecting people and property from storm damage to be realized before the height of hurricane season.”

Material will be dredged from the Folly River. This project is paid for by federal emergency beach rehabilitation funding.
