Citadel seeks minority contractors for Capers Hall reconstruction

Minority contractors can expect to see more opportunities to work on The Citadel’s upcoming construction projects.

The college said in a news release that leaders are looking to expand The Citadel’s minority contractor base as resources for future projects, most specifically for its Capers Hall Reconstruction Project

The school will begin demolishing its bustling Capers Hall this summer, with plans to erect a facility in its place that’s 40% larger. The project will cost $68 million, with $50 million set aside for construction, and will be the largest construction project in The Citadel’s history, the college said.

The Capers Hall Replacement Project, approved by the city in 2020, will feature 37 classrooms, 200 offices, collaborative work spaces and a 250-seat theater. Construction is anticipated to be completed in 2023.

“This is an important project for The Citadel community and for the broader Charleston community,” said Shawn Edwards, chief diversity officer for The Citadel.” We intend for at least 10% of the work on the new Capers Hall to be awarded to minority contractors.”

Contractors do not need to be certified by the state to come to the session or bid on projects, the school said. Help will be provided for those unsure how to navigate the certification process.

In the end, the collaboration benefits everyone, Edwards said. Helping contractors procure certifications enables them to bid on future state projects, increasing competition and helping to keep costs down, Edwards said.

Those interested in learning how to bid on elements can attend The Citadel’s Minority Information Session from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Feb. 16. The meeting will be at the school’s Altman Center at 68C Hagood Ave.

Edwards is invested in recruiting more minority contractors and suppliers and is joined in his efforts by representatives from the college’s Department of Finance, and Facilities and Engineers.

The February session is open to all minority contractors and will include other community partners, such as the Hispanic Business Association Charleston, the National Action Network Southeast chapter and the Charleston Trident Urban League.
