SC Biz News took home 14 awards in the S.C. Press Association’s 2019 contest, including seven first-place honors.

The Charleston Regional Business Journal won first place in the newspaper publication category, with contest judges noting its “strong coverage and good use of photos.” The Columbia Regional Business Report won third place in that category.

SCBIZ Magazine was named the top magazine or specialty publication for its Summer 2019 issue. ”Very good usage of photos and graphics. Good writing. Strong and varied content,” judges said of the work of Ryan Wilcox, Steve McDaniel and Jane James.

SC Biz publications swept the business reporting category, led by GSA Business Report editor Ross Norton’s first-place win for his story on the legal battle over the Duke Mayonnaise name. Renée Sexton of the Columbia Regional Business Report took second place with an article detailing the widespread growth in West Columbia, while Patrick Hoff of the Charleston Regional Business Journal won third for an article on a ballot referendum to establish a municipal electric utility in Goose Creek.

Hoff won second place in news reporting for an article detailing the renovation of a former elementary school, while Columbia Regional Business Report editor Melinda Waldrop won third for an article focusing on how assistive technology increases independence for individuals with disabilities.

Waldrop won first place in feature writing for a look at Columbia Down Under, a network of former restaurants and clubs underneath the downtown Arcade building. She also won third place in column writing for a piece on positive change, including the 2019 NCAA tournament in Columbia, that South Carolina is experiencing after the removal of the Confederate flag from atop the Statehouse.

Kim McManus of the Charleston Regional Business Journal won first place for news photo for a shot of 2019 U.S. Women’s Open champion Jeongeun Lee6, while Hoff took second with a picture of new cranes being delivered to the S.C. Ports Authority’s Wando Terminal at sunrise.

Jessica Stout won first place in page one design for her work on the GSA Business Report, while Andrew Sprague took first in feature page design for his work on Lake Wylie Today.

The annual awards ceremony was held online Sept. 14-18.
