Columbia area artists selected for Art in the Airport program

The Columbia Metropolitan Airport has announced the slate of Columbia area artists selected to participate in its Art in the Airport program for 2023-24.

The artists are Shaina Manuel, Michael Angelo Cruz, Candace Thibault and Karen Petta, according to a news release. They will have the opportunity throughout the year to utilize the airport walls as temporary gallery space.

Shaina Manuel will exhibit from March through May. Originally from northern Virginia, she was works as a teacher in Columbia and does both commissioned artwork and personal pieces.

Michael Angelo Cruz is originally from New York but currently lives in Elgin. His artwork spans many mediums including soap stone carvings, watercolor, clay, air brush, acrylics and oils. His work will be on display from June through August.

Candace Thibeault’s work will be on display from September through November. She grew up in South Carolina and specializes in mixed media artwork.

Karen Petta moved to South Carolina in 2005 from Wisconsin. She previously worked as a therapist concentrating on treatment of post-traumatic stress, behavioral and mood disorders. Petta specializes in in painting and will display her works from December 2023 through February 2024.

“CAE’s Art in the Airport program provides a fantastic opportunity and picturesque platform for local artists to showcase their works of art and unbelievably creative minds,” said Kim J. Crafton, director of marketing and air service development for CAE. “Additionally, this program enhances our travelers’ experience while simultaneously creating a sense of regional place within the airport. Once a traveler lands, these works of art will be the first artistic and cultural touchpoints they have for Columbia and the region.”
