North Charleston-based Coastal Corrugated Inc. has been acquired by Atlantic Packaging, based in Wilmington, N.C.

Coastal Corrugated, located on Coosaw Creek Boulevard, was founded in 1987 by Jim Bozard.

The company manufactures large corrugated boxes for various manufacturing sectors, as well as custom protective packaging components for the automotive industry and its suppliers.

Atlantic was founded in 1946 by journalist W. Horace Carter. The company has 18 regional facilities, including locations in Summerville, Greenville, Charlotte and Atlanta.

Wes Carter, president of Atlantic Packaging, said in a video announcing the acquisition that the two companies have been working together for nearly 15 years and that Coastal Corrugated has served as a supplier to Atlantic, especially in the custom corrugated packaging sector.

“So we’ve been very familiar with the company,” Carter said. “Great family company, very similar culture to Atlantic, so the opportunity to bring Coastal into the Atlantic family is really exciting for our organization.”

He added that the location in North Charleston is a logical connection point between Atlantic’s new packaging solution center in Charlotte and the 10 other facilities across the Carolinas and Georgia.

Coastal Corrugated directed questions about the acquisition to Atlantic Packaging’s corporate office. Carter did not respond to a voicemail or email by press time.
