As the country continues to see record import volumes, the S.C. Ports Authority handled 114,671 import containers in the month of August, an 18% year-over-year increase.

The ports set an August record, moving 234,688 TEUs — an industry measurement equivalent to a 20-foot container — at Wando Welch Terminal, North Charleston Terminal and Hugh K. Leatherman Terminal. TEU volumes are up 12% compared to this time last year.

Fiscal-year-to-date, SCPA has handled 479,509 TEUs, an increase of 24% year-over-year. The ports have also seen a 24% increase in pier containers, which account for boxes of any size, during the same time.

For August, the SCPA handled 130,729 pier containers, up 12% from last year.

Vehicles were also strong for August, with 26,044 rolling across the docks of Columbus Street Terminal. Inland port activity remained steady for the month, with 11,902 rail lifts at Inland Port Greer and 2,635 rail moves handled at Inland Port Dillon.

“Shippers and retailers can rely on S.C. Ports’ efficient operations, cargo capacity and berth availability to keep goods moving through the Southeast supply chain,” said S.C. Ports Authority President and CEO Jim Newsome. “The global supply chain is however under tremendous stress due to disruptions from the pandemic. The slowdown in cargo velocity that we are currently experiencing due to a number of supply chain constraints is concerning as we head into the peak season this fall.”
