Twenty-four school district and community organizations will receive a portion of a $700,000 grant from the S.C. Department of Education’s Summer Reading Camp Community Partnership.
The grant, funded by a General Assembly appropriation, aims to expand existing summer reading camps that provide instructional services to elementary school students working toward grade-level reading proficiency.
The 2017-18 school year marks the first that a student must be retained in third grade if he or she does not meet state reading assessment standards. Successful completion of a summer reading camp is one of seven good-cause exemptions from mandatory retention.
“A student’s ability to read is a critical predictor of educational and lifelong success,” state superintendent Molly Spearman said in a news release. “Summer reading camps provide students with extended time and support to help them become stronger readers while combating summer reading loss in a fun, active environment.”
