Midlands Technical College will play host to the Free Enterprise Leadership Challenge at its Beltine campus June 18-22. The program, which teaches leadership and philanthropic principles, has been attended by more than 9,000 high school students during the last 23 years.

This year’s challenge is taking place in Columbia as well as at schools in North Carolina, Florida and Texas.

During the five-day event, students create a company and a product to sell. At the end of the program, students can choose to either keep their company’s profits or donate them to Kiva, a nonprofit website that allows donors to make loans to entrepreneurs in developing countries. FELC graduates have given more than $47,000 to entrepreneurs worldwide through Kiva.

The program is open to rising high school sophomores, juniors or seniors. A $50 application fee includes program costs, meals and materials.

“The FELC program and principles coincide with many of the programs MTC offers for students interested in leadership, business and enterprise,” said Lee Hunt, Midlands Tech’s program manager for management and marketing, in a news release.
