A department at Clemson University has been named after Irmo-based home builder Great Southern Homes founder Michael Nieri and wife Robyn after a donation to the university’s construction science and management department.

The department in the College of Architecture, Arts and Humanities is now named the Nieri Family Department of Construction Science and Management, according to a news release from the Building Industry Association of Central South Carolina.

The department is one of four named departments at Clemson, according to the release.

Michael Nieri was inducted in the S.C. Housing Hall of Fame in 2018 for his work in and support of the state’s home building industry.

“Michael Nieri is an incredible champion of housing and has had a profound effect on the housing industry, building beautiful homes and communities for South Carolinians,” Earl McLeod, BIA executive director, said in the release. “Michael has gone above and beyond with his efforts with the Building Industry Association of Central S.C. but is most widely recognized for his philanthropic efforts as the president of the Building Industry Charitable Foundation.”

The foundation has awarded $543,400 in scholarships to children of BIA members and other students who meet program criteria during the past 17 years, according to its website.
