South Carolina ETV and Public Radio (SCETV) has teamed up with Aiken Technical College to provide free certified tower technician courses to military veterans through a partnership with Warriors 4 Wireless and Safety LMS.

The course is designed to help train veterans to get jobs in the rapidly growing tower industry, which is facing an increased need for skilled workers, according to a press release.

The certified tower technician course lasts 12 days and allows students to gain practical experience by climbing the college’s 90-foot towers, along with SCETV’s 787-foot tower in Barnwell. Students will also earn several industry-recognized credentials such as OSHA 10, First Aid CPR and Authorized Climber.

The first course started on June 6, and the course will be offered regularly.

“SCETV is excited to be part of an effort that educates veterans the much-needed tower profession,” said Mark Jahnke, SCETV’s vice president of engineering and technology. “From broadcasters to cell phone users, we all need dedicated and trained individuals to work on towers to supply the critical data and communications networks around the country.”

Warriors 4 Wireless is a charitable organization that helps veterans find careers in the growing 5G wireless industry. So far, the organization has connected more than 3,100 veterans with telecom career opportunities, according to figures provided by Aiken Technical College.
