Solar developer Southern Current is expanding its rapidly growing state solar farm presence with 17 new projects within Darlington County in a collective capital investment of $340 million.

Charleston-based Southern Current develops solar projects in the residential, commercial and utility-scale markets across the Southeast. The company manages projects from site selection through operation.

“Southern Current is proud to make Darlington County home to many of our projects,” Southern Current Chief Development Officer Paul Fleury said in a news release. “We’re excited to roll out these major clean energy infrastructure investments over the next three to five years, which will produce substantial tax revenues to the county for decades to come.”

In June, Southern Current announced a $30 million investment in new facilities throughout Anderson County. That news came on the heels of the company’s $20 million investment in a new project in Aiken County and its collaboration on a 7.61-acre solar field in Kingstree. Southern Current also invested $100 million in five new solar farms in Lee County and partnered with Lowcountry Regional Water System to commission a 1.4-megawatt solar farm in Hampton County in February.

“Southern Current’s substantial investment in solar power in Darlington County is consistent with our commitment to environmentally clean growth,” Darlington County Council chair Bobby Hudson said. “We are confident this will be a mutually beneficial partnership for the company and our community.”
