Coronal Energy is constructing a new solar project in Florence County. The Rankin Solar Center is projected to bring close to $15 million of capital investment.

“The Rankin Solar Center is a special one for Coronal Energy,” Russ Edwards, Coronal Energy vice president of development, said in a news release. “It marks Coronal's first solar project in South Carolina and represents the culmination of a partnership with Florence County that began in 2014.”

The center will generate 10 megawatts of solar power, enough to power close to 2,000 homes annually, according to the release from the S.C. Department of Commerce.

Coronal Energy, an electric utility headquartered in Charlottesville, Va., owns and manages a 333-megawatt portfolio in more than 20 states.

“Coronal Energy will not only bring investment to Florence County but also help create sustainable energy for the future,” Kent Caudle, Florence County council chairman, said.

The new development, located off Corrie Farm Road in Florence, is expected to come online in the fourth quarter of 2019.

“Planning for the future is an important part of economic development,” Frank Brand, Florence County Economic Partnership chairman, said. “Solar farm developments like Coronal Energy will help us build a better community.”
