Recent excessive rainfall caused the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control to close some shellfish harvesting beds in Charleston County, according to a news release.

Shellfish harvesting is not allowed from Captain Sams Inlet, by Kiawah and Seabrook islands, north to Garris Landing and the north point of Bulls Island, according to Mike Pearson, manager of DHEC’s Shellfish Sanitation Section.

“The affected area will reopen once water quality data indicate that bacteria levels are once again suitable for shellfish harvesting,” Pearson said in the news release. “Previous closures in the Wando River remain in effect.”
