A new flood relief fund backed by some of the state’s most prominent citizens and natives has been established to further help those in need.

The One SC Flood Relief Fund, a product of the Central Carolina Community Foundation, was unveiled today by Gov. Nikki Haley and a host of notable South Carolinians. Among its advisory committee are celebrities Stephen Colbert and Darius Rucker, football icons Dabo Swinney, Steve Spurrier, Marcus Lattimore and Tajh Boyd, and NFL owners Jerry Richardson and Bob McNair.

“We’ve been given a lot,” said Dawn Staley, USC’s women’s basketball coach. “To whom much is given, much is required. And this is an easy requirement for all of us. If you live and you breathe every day, here’s an opportunity to get behind something that affects so many people.”

About 5,000 S.C. families have been vetted that meet the criteria for financial relief, and about 1,200 individuals have immediate needs. McNair, a USC graduate and owner of the Houston Texans, has put down an initial $100,000 donation to kick off the fund.

“I think it showcases the greatness of South Carolina,” former Gov. David Beasley said. “How we as citizens can come together. People of faith regardless of their denomination, regardless of their religion, come together based upon the love of your neighbor.”

Haley’s Original Six Foundation is underwriting the cost of the operations, so all donations will go straight to rebuilding. Money will be put in grant form to give to nonprofits in order to do the work they need, she said.

Those seeking relief must fill out an application to be considered.

“The one common thing that I see all the time is that people stay together,” Lattimore said. “People love each other. People stay close. This is another opportunity for us as South Carolinians to show the whole country how strong we are, how much we love each other and to give back as much as we can to this state.”

Donations can be made online or by texting “ONE SC” to 843-606-5995. Checks can also be made payable to Central Carolina Community Foundation, One SC, 2711 Middleburg Drive Suite 213, Columbia, SC 29204.
