State, federal tax payment plans available

With individual income taxes due a week from today, the S.C. Department of Revenue is reminding taxpayers of available resources for those unable to pay a tax bill.

Taxes are due April 18, though the SCDOR and the Internal Revenue Service offer payment plans for those who qualify. State payment plans may be requested from the SCDOR if individuals do not have an active levy or garnishment with the agency and if they have received a notice.

The SCDOR agreement requires all returns going forward to be filed and paid in full. Individuals must also have a bank account and allow payments to be made via bank drafts, among other requirements.

The SCDOR also advises taxpayers to file their returns on time to reduce penalties and interest, which is added based on the amount of tax not paid by the due date. Taxpayers should also pay as much as possible by the due date so future interest charges are lower.

More information on payment plans is available online at SCDOR’s website at dor.sc.gov/payplan. Information about IRS payment plans is available at IRS.gov.

The state agency also advises taxpayers to determine what caused an unexpected bill and to consider adjusting withholding or making or increasing quarterly estimated payments.

The SCDOR also advises filing electronically and choosing direct deposit for faster and more accurate processing. Refund status may be checked online at dor.sc.gov/refund, with processing expected to take six to eight weeks for e-returns and more than eight weeks for paper returns.

Tax payments be made using MyDORWAY at dor.sc.gov/pay.
