The Blood Connection held a grand opening for its Lexington donation center today.
The nonprofit center, located at 5141 Sunset Blvd., will also serve as a hub and packing center for Midlands blood mobiles, according to a news release from the organization.
Based in Greenville, The Blood Connection has centers throughout South Carolina, including in Charleston and Florence, as well as in North Carolina and Savannah.
Historically low donor turnout during the past few months has led to a critical need for blood donations, according to the release. The newly renovated donation center will allow the organization to collect other life-saving blood products, including platelets and plasma.
The new center, which will allow for more than 10 donors to give at a time, will help The Blood Connection meet its goal of 800 blood donations per day, according to the release.
