Carnival Cruise Line plans to bring a newer, larger ship to Charleston in May 2019, the company said today.

The 3,002-passenger Carnival Sunshine will have a year-round schedule of four- and five-day cruises from the Port of Charleston to the Bahamas. The ship is expected to carry around 220,000 passengers annually from the port.

“With its convenient location and strong tourism appeal, Charleston is one of our most popular homeports and we’re delighted to build upon this success with the deployment of Carnival Sunshine,” Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line, said in a news release.

Carnival Ecstasy, which currently sails from Charleston, will relocate to Jacksonville, Fla., in May 2019.

The Carnival Sunshine ship has more than 550 rooms and has water parks, recreation areas, pools and restaurants.

“The decision by Carnival Cruise Line to homeport the Carnival Sunshine in Charleston is an important affirmation of their success and commitment to operations in Charleston,” S.C. State Ports Authority CEO Jim Newsome said in the release. “SCPA’s cruise business is an important part of our maritime commerce mission and diversification of business segments.”
