Each year, the S.C. Stingrays invite fans to open their hearts and launch thousands of teddy bears onto the ice in what has become a tradition at hockey rinks across America.

Stingrays)This year’s teddy bear toss in North Charleston was held Dec. 9, and Stingrays fans dropped more than 3,000 furry friends onto the ice after the first goal was scored five minutes into the game by Rays forward Dylan Margonari. The Atlanta Gladiators had to bear the cascade of stuffed animals dropping around them.

The tons of teddy bears were donated to the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree Program, which will go to help many children in need during the holidays. Stingrays fans also helped raise more than $15,000 for the Ronald McDonald House Charleston with a specialty jersey auction.

We thought this last Daily Journal email of the year was worth reliving that moment of utter joy: The puck hits the net and the fur begins to fly as our community gives back in one of the many ways we’ve come to expect.

So pour a mug of hot chocolate, use some of that high-speed internet your company pays for and enjoy the moment, along with a few other noteworthy teddy bear tosses from around the country.
