Kudzu Bakery and Market is moving its Mount Pleasant shop to the Bowman Place Shopping Center early next year.

Owner Karen Herndon said the bakery has outgrown its current space at 794 Coleman Blvd.

“We’re just excited to have more space,” she said. “It’ll allow us to … produce more in the kitchen and handle more orders. And it just gets really crowded, especially around the holidays.”

For example, Herndon said, during the holiday season last year, Kudzu ran out of storage space and Herndon was forced to store the bakery’s paper towels in her car.

The new location is expected to open in January, which Herndon said gives Kudzu “one last hurrah” in its current location, where it has been for almost seven years.

Herndon said the shopping center has ample parking and is close enough to the bakery’s current location that it won’t alienate the customer base.

“We didn’t want to make it harder for Sullivan’s (Island) or Old Village (Mount Pleasant) or even downtown and Kiawah (Island) to get to us, so I feel like we can keep all of them and then just be more accessible to the rest of the area,” Herndon said, adding that she hopes other businesses in the shopping plaza drive traffic to Kudzu.

“We’re really excited to be moving in there,” she said. “I think it’s going to be a good location and it’s bigger, which is what we needed.”
