Goose Creek launched an economic development quest last year that included finding a food and beverage tenant for the city’s old fire station building.

Now, the city has announced that effort is moving forward with a new brewery and restaurant in that building. The building at 201 Button Hall Ave. was a focal point for Goose Creek’s economic development efforts.

Mayor Greg Habib said the fire station building is an important part of a larger plan to redevelop that part of the city and let residents and visitors know the city is open for business.

“This was special; this was our old fire station, and we wanted to use this as a catalytic event to redevelop,” Habib said, noting that Goose Creek doesn’t have a traditional downtown area.

He said the brewery was important, but perhaps even more important was the restaurant.

“The pairing of the restaurant was even more important for us,” Habib said. “Most of our restaurants realize the more restaurants we bring in, the better it is for all of them. If people know they can come to the city of Goose Creek and stay in the city of Goose Creek, everybody benefits.”

The building was sold to CityVolve, a real estate development company that helped shape some commercial parts of North Charleston’s Park Circle neighborhood, among other regional projects.

When CityVolve took over the building in 2019, co-founder Jeff Baxter said he and his partner, Jim Haley, noticed that many people who visited Park Circle were actually from Goose Creek.

“We felt like there was something there,” Baxter said at the time. “We looked into it and we were attracted to the strong residential market and we see it as being underserved by local, unique restaurants, and retail and entertainment opportunities.”

Baxter and Haley said they like the structure and location of the old fire station and saw a great deal of potential.

“There’s a huge market that we think is not being met,” Baxter said.

Creek City Grill and Brewery LLC, a brewery and restaurant, is opening in the building, the company announced in a news release. Owners said the location will have a brewhouse, taproom and bar, along with indoor and outdoor seating.

Co-owner Eric Roberts, who owns Wide Awake Brewing, said Creek City Grill and Brewery is expected to open in Q1 of next year. Roberts plans to close Wide Awake Brewing's location in Berkeley County and move all of his operations to Goose Creek.
