No one would have been surprised if South Carolinians turned into Ebenezer Scrooge this holiday, but as it turns out, the spirit of the state is a lot more like the optimistic Bob Cratchit.

According to a CenturyLink study, South Carolina ranks third in a list of states where Christmas spirit survived 2020. North Carolina ranked No. 1.

The internet, phone and TV service provider, based out of Louisiana, used six key metrics surrounding online activity and area culture to determine which states survived the pandemic with their holiday spirit intact.

Those metrics include:

29%

Google searches for Christmas movies and gingerbread houses

28%

Online shopping — via Google Shopping Trends — for wrapping paper, Christmas cards, Christmas ornaments and “Elf on a Shelf”

14.5%

Christmas music streams

14.5%

Charitable giving in the last documented tax year, as defined by the IRS

7%

Tweets about Christmas

7%

Number of Christmas tree farms per capita

South Carolina’s ranking is especially notable given the state’s weather and geographic location. Nearly half of the top 10 states are those that enjoy white Christmases, while seven out of the bottom 10 are warmer-climate states.
