A popular Mexican restaurant in downtown Camden plans to open a Columbia location this summer.

Masa Mexican Street Food will occupy a space at 2811 Rosewood Drive near the area’s new Starbucks. The location is next to the former Rosewood Baptist Church which was recently transformed into apartments.

Owners of Masa started the restaurant in 2020 because of a desire to provide “high quality food and drinks in a simpler, more accessible setting” according to the eatery’s website.

Masa’s sister restaurants are Coa Agaveria y Cocina at 823-A Lady St. in Columbia’s Vista, which features Mexican cuisine in a more upscale setting, and the popular Salud Mexican Kitchen and Tequila Lounge in downtown Camden.

Masa is a counter-service restaurant that also includes a full-service bar. Tamales and tortillas are homemade, and the menu includes dishes such as street corn, tacos, quesadillas, burritos, bowls and a variety of side dishes.

The eatery is also known for its full bar, specialty cocktails on draft and tiki-style craft drinks.

The Columbia location will feature the same menu as the one available in Camden, according to a manager at Masa.

There is no set opening date for Masa’s Columbia location yet.

In Camden, Masa is located at 2209 West Dekalb St., and is open 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and closed on Sundays.
