The Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce has selected the 2018 class of Leadership Charleston, a professional development program established in 1974.
The 58 program participants will spend the next 10 months working with community leaders and organizations to learn about the challenges facing the Charleston area. The program focuses on issues such as infrastructure, workforce development and global competitiveness.
“The Leadership Charleston program provides our up-and-coming leaders the opportunity to learn about our community, to collaborate with their peers and to find areas in which they can contribute their talent in moving our community forward,” Mary Garcia, senior vice president of BNC Bank, said in a statement.
The program consists of monthly meetings, each covering a different regional issue. Sometimes presenters speak at the meeting and other times participants go on outings, such as a police ride-along or a trip to the Statehouse in Columbia.
Participants are also asked to attend one community meeting a month, which could be a city council meeting or school board meeting. They also participate in Trident United Way’s Day of Caring, which this year is on Nov. 17.
Participants are expected to continue being active in the community after graduating the program.
“It’s a community leadership program,” said Erin Aylor, vice president of marketing for the chamber. “It’s really engaging these participants in our community and helping them grow as leaders to make community impact.”
