Unemployment remains at 3.3% in S.C.

The number of people working in South Carolina increased by more than 7,100 in December 2018 to a record level of 2,242,540, according to the S.C. Department of Employment and Workforce.

The state’s unemployment rate remained unchanged from November at 3.3%. The state’s labor force increased by more than 7,500 to 2,319,627 people.

The national unemployment rate increased to 3.9% in December 2018, up from 3.7% in November 2018.

Since December 2017, employment gains in South Carolina totaled approximately 21,695 people, according to DEW, while the number of unemployed dropped by approximately 20,792 people.

The leisure and hospitality industry saw employment rise by 5,200 people in December 2018, while employment in the construction industry dropped by 700. From December 2017 to December 2018, the trade, transportation and utilities industries gained 15,700 workers, while construction lost 5,100.
