Milliken & Co. is boosting domestic production of an antimicrobial fabric technology used in scrubs, lab coats and other medical products.

The company will prioritize the production and distribution of BioSmart fabric products in response to a nationwide demand for medical protective equipment, according to a news release.

BioSmart fabric products, manufactured domestically in partnership with Prime Medical, uses chlorine bleach-activated technology and molecular engineering to kill up to 99.9% of the bacteria and viruses it touches, including Hepatitis A and Klebsiella pneumoniae, according to the release.

Milliken integrates the fabric technology into medical lab coats and scrubs, privacy curtains, aprons, butcher coats, work shirts and pants which are produced by other textile manufacturers.

“We are committed to protecting our medical community when their health is of vital importance,” Chad McAllister, president and executive vice president of Milliken’s textile division, said in the release. “Through scaling up manufacturing, production and distribution channels, we are dedicating the necessary resources to defend those who need it most.”
