Abdu Saleh, owner of Express Tobacco in Marion, has been arrested and charged with tax evasion after underreporting more than $1.1 million in sales, the S.C. Department of Revenue said.

For tax years 2015 and 2016 and filing periods January 2017 through October 2017, Saleh reported $1.39 million in gross proceeds. A revenue department investigation found the gross proceeds of the business actually totaled $2.5 million, according to a news release.

Saleh evaded paying nearly $89,000 in state taxes and faces three counts of tax evasion. He was arrested Oct. 25 and is currently being held at the Marion County Detention Center.

If convicted, Saleh faces up to five years in prison and/or fines of up to $10,000 on each charge.
