A Marion city councilwoman is charged with medical assistance provider fraud for allegedly filing false Medicaid claims.

Latashia Vasthi Lewis was charged and turned herself in to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center in Richland County on Sept. 25, according to S.C. Attorney General Alan Wilson’s office.

According to an arrest warrant, Lewis submitted fraudulent time entries indicating she had provided care to a client when she had not while working as a home health aide for Addus Healthcare between Nov. 1, 2019 and May 1. The S.C. Department of Health and Human Services paid Addus Healthcare, which then paid Lewis, for the services.

Filing a false claim by a medical provider is a misdemeanor punishable by up to three years in prison and a fine of up to $1,000.
