One worker has died and another was injured during an incident Sunday night at the KapStone paper mill in North Charleston.
The employees were performing maintenance work in an area that was offline for repairs when an incident occurred at 8:45 p.m., according to a company statement.
The second employee was taken to an area hospital and has since been released, the company said. The company has not released any further details.
Calls to the North Charleston Police Department and the Charleston County Coroner’s Office were not returned by press time. The coroner’s report is expected later today.
“Our primary concern is for the privacy and welfare of the families involved and for the safety and well-being of employees working on our site,” the statement said.
The incident was reported to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and is under investigation.
KapStone Paper and Packaging Corp. employs 6,300 people nationwide. The Northbrook, Ill.-based company produces containerboard, corrugated packaging products and kraft paper at four paper mills. The North Charleston plant is located at 5600 Virginia Ave.
