Helping Out highlights some of the many charitable events and activities going on in the Charleston area. Submissions should be sent to [email protected]

The Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina is in its third year of funding for the Well-Being of Children in Kinship Care pilot project, through the Halos Kinship Care program.

Funds provided by the foundation will be used to support a Halos success coach and volunteer coordinator; education and training; emergency funds for kinship families; and advocacy.

This is the third disbursement of funds from the Sisters of Charity Foundation in partnership with The Duke Endowment, totaling $1,017,014.


Charleston County’s Environmental Management Department is holding free shred events for Earth Day. Citizens can bring confidential documents to the following locations from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday:

  • Citadel Mall, 2070 Sam Rittenberg Blvd., Charleston.
  • Mount Pleasant Department of Motor Vehicles, 1189 Sweetgrass Basket Parkway, Mount Pleasant.
  • Northwoods Mall, 2150 Northwoods Blvd., North Charleston.
  • Signal Point Road Convenience Center, 1716 Signal Point Road, Charleston.

No commercial business material will be accepted, and no items will be accepted other than documents to be shredded. The event is rain or shine.


Hops for Housing will take place from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at Home Team BBQ’s downtown Charleston location. The event is a fundraiser for One80 Place.


CharlestonGood will host a special collaborative fundraising event at 6 p.m. April 30 at Mira Charleston to raise money for a new program they plan to launch this summer.

The event will include Napa Valley wine tastings and hors d’oeuvres from Butcher & Bee, along with live music and an art exhibit on the back deck.

Tickets are $50 and advance purchase is required.

Funds raised will go toward CharlestonGood’s mission to provide fiscal sponsorship to the grass-roots community.


People Against Rape will hold an Arts Gala from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at South of Broadway Theatre Company as part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

The gala will include visual and performing arts, a silent auction and a raffle. Proceeds will benefit survivors of sexual violence in the Lowcountry. Hors d’oeuvres, wine and other beverages will be served. Cocktail attire is suggested.

Tickets are $12 in advance or $15 at the door.


The Point is hosting a Field to Fork dinner from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Ambrose Family Farm. The dinner will include a beer and wine reception, a farm tour, a dinner prepared by chef Joe Jacobson from Black Wood Smokehouse, and live music.

Tickets are $125 per person; all attendees must be 21 or older.
