Helping Out highlights some of the many charitable events and activities going on in the Charleston area. ATTENTION: Submissions should now be made using our online form.

The Association for the Blind & Visually Impaired – Charleston has received a $4,128 grant from the James O. and Harriet P. Rigney Endowment of the Coastal Community Foundation of South Carolina to provide funding for a vision clinic during the 2018-2019 school year.

The funds will support the continuation of the association’s Focus on Children program, which provides free vision screenings, comprehensive eye exams, prescription glasses, referrals and eye care education to Charleston County students.

We Are Family, an organization for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning, intersex and straight ally youth, is set to host an event from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at 529 Meeting St. that will be a fundraising reception for its pop-up store Closet Case Thrift and an opening reception for a resource center that will serve people experiencing homelessness.

The event, which is free and open to the public, will include music by DJ Trevor D, cocktails, and hors d’oeuvres from Whole Foods donated by Mickey Bakst. Attendees will vote on a name for the new space.

The Charleston Animal Society held its inaugural golf tournament on April 30 at Kiawah Island Club’s River Course. The tournament raised $105,000 for Toby’s Fund, which provides the medical resources to treat animals suffering from health issues.

In total, the proceeds will save almost 290 animals and cover almost one-fifth of the annual cost of Toby’s Fund, which treats abused, abandoned and injured animals in the community.

The tournament had 29 teams and 116 golfers, and it included raffles and live and silent auctions.
