The Central Carolina Community Foundation is taking part in events celebrating August as Black Philanthropy Month, a national effort to highlight and increase African-American giving.

The month, in its eighth year, will include the first Giving Black Day on Aug. 28. Led by the Young, Black and Giving Back Institute in Washington, D.C., the initiative urges donors to contribute to organizations serving black communities from 8 a.m. until 11 p.m.

Local nonprofits interested in participating can visit www.givingblackday.org for more information.

The Central Carolina Community Foundation will also sponsor a game day on Aug. 19 to highlight 13 local nonprofits founded or led by African Americans. The event, in partnership with The Talented Tenth SC and Columbia Urban League Young Professionals, will be held from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Elm Abode.

Renowned community organizer and author Jackie Copeland-Carson and the Pan-African Women’s Philanthropy Network founded Black Philanthropy Month in 2011. It aims to promote charitable giving and encourage community dialogue.

“It is an honor to partner with a number of terrific organizations to promote and host Black Philanthropy Month celebrations across the Midlands,” JoAnn Turnquist, president and CEO of Central Carolina Community Foundation, said in a news release. “We believe that the diversity of our communities is a fundamental strength of our region and are looking forward to celebrating and supporting the work of our region’s black philanthropists.”
