Midlands nonprofit to be featured on The Today Show

Five days before it unveils its new, permanent home, Family Promise of the Midlands will be featured on The Today Show in an interview with program anchor and Columbia native Craig Melvin.

Family Promise of the Midlands is a Columbia-based branch of a national nonprofit focused on combating homelessness.

The Today Show segment will air between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. on Thursday, according to a news release. Melvin will also serve as master of ceremonies at the nonprofit’s annual fundraising gala, Night of Promise, on Saturday.

The organization, which leased space at Ebenezer Lutheran Church on Richland Street until January, will relocate to a 6,000-square-foot building at 1333 Omarest Drive donated by supporters Barb and Kuniharu Kubodera, according to an event announcement. The new location will be unveiled during a ceremony on March 26.

Melvin, a former anchor at WIS TV, graduated from Columbia High School and Wofford College in Spartanburg.

Founded in 1986, Family Promise has affiliates in more than 180 U.S. cities, according to its website.

The event showcasing its new location will begin at 4 p.m. and include refreshments and a tour, along with plans for the building’s redesign. Graduates of the program will speak at the ceremony, and Claas Ehlers, CEO of Family Promise, will share remarks at 4:45 p.m.
