A new luxury townhouse community is coming to the corner of Broad and Barre streets.

The Charles, set to open in spring 2023 with four-story townhomes overlooking the Ashley River, is now available to buyers starting at $3.7 million.

The community is designed by Antunovich Associates Designworks of Chicago and developed by The Beach Co., located in Charleston.

"Only 19 townhomes are planned in order to place these stately homes along Broad and Barre streets and accommodate a future park along the river,” said Dan Doyle, The Beach Co.’s COO and senior vice president of development, in a press release.

Architecture will include limestone and brick exteriors, street-level entries with wrought-iron gates and bluestone stoops, and top-floor terraces with slate-shingled roofs.

"The Charles commands one of the best waterfront locations in Charleston's historic district with Ashley River and Charleston Harbor views,” Doyle said. “It’s only fitting that the design of the buildings match the caliber of the location. It is a rare opportunity to have a new construction home on the Charleston Peninsula."

The community will feature shared amenities, including a saltwater swimming pool, playgrounds, picnic areas and pavilions. Each townhome also includes a top-floor den, private outdoor terrace and a private driveway entrance with custom iron gates that open to Barre Street.

The Charles will be located across from the Charleston City Marina and a block away from Colonial Lake Park and the General William Moultrie Playground and tennis courts. The Jasper Apartments, another luxury real estate development from The Beach Co., sits right across the street.

The Jasper, located at 310 Broad St., includes 75,000 square feet of class AAA office space, restaurants, 219 luxury rental homes and 25,000 square feet of first-floor retail space with an enclosed parking garage.

"The Charles will complement The Jasper, and future owners will benefit from the adjacent retail and amenity offerings located across Barre Street," Doyle said.

Construction for The Jasper has wrapped up, and development of The Charles is now underway. The project is expected to take up 2.2 acres of land at St. Mary’s Field, with roughly half an acre becoming a park.

A temporary cell tower on the corner of Broad Street and Lockwood Drive was taken down to make way for the new site. The tower previously ensured AT&T and T-Mobile cell reception for nearby residents and first responders during construction of The Jasper and has been replaced by a new antenna located atop of the apartments.

No exact timetable for construction of The Charles has been set.
