Toys R Us Inc. is closing 182 stores across the country, it announced Wednesday, including the Babies R Us location in the North Rivers Shopping Center in North Charleston.

In an open letter to customers, CEO David Brandon said store closing sales are scheduled to begin in early February, with the majority of locations closing in mid-April. The Babies R Us in Columbia is also slated for closure.

New Jersey-based Toys R Us Inc. filed for bankruptcy protection in September.

“The actions we are taking are necessary to give us the best chance to emerge from our bankruptcy proceedings as a more viable and competitive company that will provide the level of service and experience you should expect from a market leader,” Brandon said in his letter.

The Toys R Us in the Promenade at Northwoods at 7800 Rivers Ave. is not among those listed for closure. Brandon said the company intends to convert a number of locations into co-branded Toys R Us and Babies R Us stores, but a spokesman for the company said no decisions have been made as to whether the North Charleston location will among those converted.
